Ukrainian military reports waves of Russian drone attacks on Kyiv
Russian attacks in Ukraine continued this week, including in the south-eastern town of Zaporizhzhia.
In short:
Russia has launched several waves of drone attacks targeting Kyiv, Ukraine's military says.
Kyiv, its surrounding region and all eastern part of Ukraine have been under air raid alerts since about 1am on Monday, local time.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties as a result of the attacks.
Russia has launched several waves of drone attacks targeting Kyiv, according to Ukraine's military, with air defence units engaged in repelling the strikes for several hours.
Kyiv, its surrounding region and all of eastern Ukraine has been under air raid alerts since about 1am on Monday, local time.
"Several enemy UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) are over and near the capital," Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app.
Ukraine's air force said earlier on Telegram that several Russian drone attacks were expected in Kyiv and Ukraine's west.
It also said it detected the launch of several guided bombs from Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine at about 4:40am, local time.
All the drones that Russia launched at Kyiv were either destroyed by defence systems or neutralised by electronic warfare Ukrainian General Serhiy Popko said on Telegram.
There were no casualties and no damage was reported, he added.
Russia has launched multiple deadly air attacks on Ukraine throughout September, targeting Ukraine's energy, military and transport infrastructure.
Attacks follow reported drone strike on Russian weapons depot
Russian strikes this week in towns such as Zaporizhzhia have caused extensive damage.
The attack came after Ukraine said on Sunday that it sent more than 100 drones deep inside Russia to hit a major weapons depot.
"Defence forces struck the Kotluban military depot" in the Volgograd region — hundreds of kilometres from the Ukrainian border — a day after a shipment of Iranian weapons reportedly arrived at the site, Ukraine's military general staff wrote on Telegram.
"A fire and ammunition detonation were observed on the depot's territory," the post said, adding that the facility was being used for storage and the modernisation of missiles and artillery.
Russia did not confirm the strike, reporting only that it had destroyed 67 drones over the Volgograd region and a total of 125 Ukrainian drones over its territory overnight.
Volgograd Governor Andrei Bocharov said falling debris from the drones sparked grass fires but did not cause casualties or damage.
The governors in the Russian regions of Voronezh and Rostov reported some damage but no casualties from the attack.
