All 12 people who were trapped 300 metres underground at a Colorado gold mine tourist attraction have been rescued.

The group had been stuck for hours after an elevator experienced a mechanical failure at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine on Thursday, local time.

The elevator was descending into the mine, near the town of Cripple Creek, when it had a mechanical problem around 150 metres beneath the surface, creating a “severe danger for the participants," Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell said at a press conference.

He said the failure resulted in one death, while four other people suffered minor injuries.

Engineers worked to make sure the elevator was working safely again before bringing the stranded visitors back up.

Sheriff Mikesell did not reveal the identity of the victim.

The 12 adults who were trapped were about 300m below ground.

They were safe and in communication with authorities while waiting, and were in good spirits after they were rescued, Sheriff Mikesell said.

Authorities gave them pizza once they were out and told them everything that had happened.

While at the bottom, authorities had only told them there was an elevator issue.

In a statement, Colorado Governor Jared Polis extended the state's "deepest condolences to the family and friends of the individual lost in this incident".

"Thanks to this collaborative effort, each of these individuals will return home safely," he added.

The cause of the malfunction is still not known and an investigation is underway.

The mine has offered tours to visitors for the last five decades and Sheriff Mikesell said there was one previous unspecified safety incident at the mine in 1986.

Mines operated as tourist attractions in Colorado must designate someone to inspect the mines and the transportation systems daily, according to the state Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety.

Sheriff Mikesell said he did not know the date of the last inspection, and records of the inspections were not immediately available online.
